dress it up with wood

i love wood in just about every shape or form. as trees in the forest, bed frames, tables, floors, lamps, you get the gist. it just makes sense that i love incorporating it into my style as well. It all began with a wooden iphone cover i was given by a friend once. i was almost more upset about losing my pretty cover (it was a one off from a guy in south africa) than the iphone, which could be replicated easily.
i went online in search of wooden iphone covers and came across this one:

this cover by idryad is lovely, i think. it gives the boring shiny surface of the iphone a sturdy, yet elegant look and i feel like my phone is well protected by it as well. iryad also has a nice selection of different styles of cases. i'm not a huge fan of the rhinestone ones, but the all wooden covers are wonderful.

i enjoyed the idea of incorporating wood into my style as much as i do into my apartment so much that i decided to get a wooden watch as well:

an american company called jord produces these lovely watches that have a truly timeless appeal, i find. they go with different styles of dress and have some sort of wholesome appeal to them that i can't quite explain.

now that i'm a new mom i couldn't help but rejoice when i discovered these be wooden bow ties for kids (modelled by my little munchkin):

admittedly, my little one is not quote ready to wear a bow-tie out just yet but when he is, i will be sure to dress him up in this one. the german guys behind be wooden also designed a handsome collection of man-sized bow-ties that i find an adorable gimmick to jazz up a studly plaid shirt look (ideally sporting a full beard as well) for a more lighthearted way to dress for say, a wedding or a summer party.

it's fun to accessorize with wood! also pretty nice can be wooden pens, sunglasses, bags (this one is amazing), umbrellas... oh the options!

accessorize: the thing with the right scarf

this is one of my favorite pictures from my archive of streetstyle photos:

i love the nonchalance of the linen, the earthy tones, the accidental gesture of the girl fixing her hair and that casually wrapped scarf. i remember that after i took this picture back in new york in 2010 i thought about scarfs a lot. in fact, i always buy a whole bunch of the during spring and again in fall, to keep a warm neck during the transitional period. but the real question is - how do you bind it?

i have to admit i usually just swing it around my neck once or twice without much thought or consideration of turning the way i bind a scarf into a fashionable gimmick. after looking through the aboutyou.de guide to wrapping a scarf in 10 different ways i might reconsider my "technique". at the end of the day, however, what matters is to have a nice scarf or shawl, that compliments your outfit. if you're still looking for the right one, here is a pretty big selection of options.

20 minutes of berlin fashion week - the Samsung Fashion Cool Downer

i'm now in my 6th year of living in berlin and if i remember correctly i've never missed a fashion week here. this summer though i'd have to make the exception as i just became a mom and a 2-week-old baby and fashion shows don't really go together all that well. the one thing baby does love, however, are strolls. Endless strolls in his buggy where he will relax and sleep through all the sirens and trucks we come by.

on one of our walks through the neighborhood we came by the pop-up event hosted by #INLAND yesterday, a store located at brunnenstraße 11, where a very "cool" new invention was presented to the fashion folk: a fridge that stores your fashion and beauty items.

the Samsung Food Showcase is the fanciest fridge on the market right now and a really smart one at that. it's full of innovation with a particular focus on the "outer case", a type of second door featuring large cases that were designed to fit a lady's fashion items such as expensive leather goods, beauty masks or nail polish. i'd try out leaving more of my makeup and purses in my fridge but i can't, because it wouldn't fit it!

at the end of the day though, a fridge with chilled drinks on a hot summer's evening is my kind of fridge, so vitaminwaters were drunk and Thomas Henry sodas were sipped while chatting with local fashionistas and looking through the considerable fashion collection one finds at the #INLAND store.

and baby? he was so impressed that he slept right through the whole thing. i can however report that his mom was happy to get a quick fashion break from strolling and a delightful 20-minute cool downer.

there's a new online store in town...

i think when it comes to shopping for clothes most people split into 2 teams. one prefers to go into the store or the mall to get a proper feel of materials and fit before they their lay money on the table. the others are all about online shopping which can be much more time-efficiant and you get to compare styles and prices within the blink of an eye.

for a long time i favored the offline retail experience, mostly because i was tired of clicking my way through endless pages of dresses and pants and shoes but also because i did not want to deal with shipping costs.
the big change in my thinking happened when more and more online shops offered to ship clothes for free and even made returns free and easy. such is the case with aboutyou.de, a new german online retailer that doubles as an info platform with some pretty cool new features.

the idea to create a crossbreed of online shop and blog is not entirely new but aboutyou.de goes a step further by curating a full-blown style council where you can get tips which bikini best suits your body type, what must-haves you need for the festivals this summer or even what sort of dresses work best for your highschool prom (could have really used that last one on my own!).

i really like that type of guide for giving me inspiration what sort of look is still missing from my closet and what i absolutely need to get my hands on. speaking of which, i had a browse of the site and made a little inspiration board for myself with items i think are cute this summer.

so for all in team online retail, have a look at the new kid on the block and pick your favorites!
